‘This building has become a fresh combination of brickwork and black joinery,’ explains Edwin Vervloet of Bedrijfsbouw Verelst, an industrial construction business. ‘The compact flat roof is used for numerous features including water storage and an HVAC system, and the presence of solar panels also means that it generates income. Optimal use is therefore made of the roof, but there’s little room left to move around. Carrying out maintenance work on it using anchor points and safety lines wouldn’t be easy. We’ve therefore opted for a raised edge with a balustrade for collective fall protection. A nice bonus is that this roof edge finish matches the building’s architecture perfectly.’ It’s an attractive system in terms of aesthetics, waterproofing and ease of use - Edwin Vervloet, Technical Director of Bedrijfsbouw Verelst
‘The client deliberately opted for aluminium’, adds Sven Keersse of Roval Aluminium. ‘It’s strong, light and 100% recyclable. Roval Aluminium also has a very wide colour range, which means we can handle any industrial or residential style. First we place clips over the concrete formwork plywood. Then the coping is placed on these. We then slide the uprights over the top and finish off with the handrail. An easy and fast waterproof installation process that can be carried out by one party.’
The raised edge protects the technical equipment on the roof against wind load, and our coping with a balustrade system protect both the roof edge and anyone who has to go on the roof. - Sven Keersse, Account Manager at Roval

Protecting the roof edge with a balustrade system: practical, durable and attractive.
In the past, roofs had little aesthetic value. The “fifth façade” was more of a necessity than an opportunity. The situation today is completely different. Flat “income-generating roofs” in green, yellow or red in particular are also expected to have a certain look and feel. Our account manager Sven Keersse will be happy to tell you more.
